Coppélia

“Coppélia” Angelo Murdocco, Caroline Matthiessen

This unconcerned, youthfully hand-written choreography was a great
success. The up-to-date staging of “Coppélia”, received an excellent,
positive reaction from the public in the Stadttheater. Set in the
depressing atmosphere of a council estate, inspired by the
Marzahn-estate and Hellersdorf areas of Berlin... the story was
amusingly, playfully told. The powerful choreography was
supplemented with comical-pantomime scenes.This shortened
version of “Coppélia”, staged with pace and a feather lightness will
most certainly speak to a Teenaged-public.

Bielefeld’s ballet director Philip Lansdale is realistic and skilful: He
makes the most out of relatively little for the audience and demands
everything from his dancers. Once more the Englishman has proven
that he is a good story teller...
This “Coppélia”, is really worth seeing, thanks to the modern
choreography, and the beautiful interpretation of the dancers...
Marieluise Jeitschko, Westfälische Nachrichten
The choreograph Philip Lansdale’s 9th production for the Bielefeld
theatre, is a success. It is a poetical, magical piece of pure romance.
There was no danger of Lansdale succumbing to tasteless,
sentimentality with this piece. The charm, poetry, humor and the
blending in of the aggressive behavior of today's youth, was well
incorporated into his choreography.
